Well, today I was feeling a little Bob Marl-ish myself. He was many things (musician, poet, songwriter, philosopher, soldier, an activist and a leader) and I feel like I’m many things as many women are. I’m a photographer, nurse, mother, wife, daughter, a leader, writer, artist and loyal friend to many just to name a few. When I first started my natural journey my main and most important goal was to show the WORLD that nappy does not = ugly and that black is beautiful but first before I showed the world I needed to show my community…starting at home.  10 years ago, I endured a lot of negative comments from my own race on why I wanted to walk around “looking like that“  My response was, “because I was born that way and I actually LIKE IT”  Today, I smile and give other naturals the look that only we know what it means, that smile of approval that says, “I’m liking what I see and keep doing what you do” It’s a breath of fresh air to see soooooo many people taking that natural journey either by rocking their afro, locs, twists, braids, knots, etc! I thank you and your hair thank you for being brave enough to endure the stares and negative comments.

Today’s style look is back to basics of sorts, no make up, freshly washed locs but not retwisted, a graphic tee, a pair of rusty red looking pants, flip flops and simple accessories. Like I always say, It doesn’t take a lot of $$$$ to look like you actually belong to somebody and with that being said, STOPPING WALKING AROUND IN PUBLIC PLACES aka WALMART with your PAJAMAS AND HOUSE SHOES ON!! Dang it people! And for heaven sakes, take that darn trash bag off your head (the bonnet) and have a LITTLE self pride!
